DIY Projects for Golf Cart Mechanics

Jul 6th 2017

The mechanics of golf carts aren’t as complicated as a modern automobile. Golf cart projects for do-it-yourself mechanics are a wonderful way to add on new accessories just in time for summer (and for the entire year, for that matter). These simple projects are meant to be easy to install and maintain, to get it done fast. Get that golf cart souped-up with the essentials to make the ride more fun. These projects can be completed easily with a simple manual and a little bit of mechanical know-how.

Keep your bag safe and out of the way with a standard Bag Attachment.

If transportation on the golf course is what you’re looking to get out of a golf cart, then a golf bag carrier will be the first on your list of purchases. It is one of the simplest, and most necessary, accessories you can install yourself. A two-bag attachment simply attaches to the opening in the back safety bar on most golf carts.

To make the installation easier, you can use a flat head screwdriver to puncture through the opening. Then tighten the bag attachment in place with the tightening knob or other fastening piece, depending on the brand you buy, that comes with the bag attachment.

That’s it! Best of all, no drilling necessary.

Blast those tunes with Audio Speakers.

Let’s face it, standard golf carts often lack good audio systems. The obvious solution is upgrading to better speakers. Fortunately, this is one of the simplest and easiest do-it-yourself projects. An upgraded sound system will give you a lot of pleasure, no matter if you use your cart for transportation around the neighborhood or your property, or you use it for golfing.

Since golf carts are normally open to the outside environment, unlike your standard automobile cabin, you want to look for outdoor speakers like Wet Sounds. These speakers are durable enough to maintain excellent quality sound under any environment you might happen to be riding on. A waterproof speaker set with flexible mounting is also a must for golf carts. Add to this Bluetooth connectivity to synchronize up to your mobile device, and you’re set.

Cruise through difficult terrain with Shock Absorbers.

For golf carts, given the terrain you often traverse, you need good shock absorbers. Shock absorbers will give your ride a bit of extra bounce and resistance when driving over more challenging terrains. Extra durable shock absorbers are perfect for those who use golf carts around the farm or for hunting, as well as for all other types of outdoor adventures.

You may need to regularly replace the front and rear shock absorbers if you subject the cart to rough roads all the time.

E-Z-Go golf carts offer some of the best built-in shock absorbers, but there is also always room for improvement.

Keep warm with a Heater.

Often, manufacturers don’t equip golf carts with the right kind of heating for colder climates. As a result, most people tend to put the golf cart into storage during the colder winter months.

But, just because it's a little chilly outside, it doesn’t mean you can’t still take the golf cart out for a spin. You can retrofit your cart with a customized heater. Most people tend to use propane heaters that fit universally into cup holders. While efficient, this is also not always the safest approach.

A better heating system is to purchase and install a 36V/48V electric heater kit. Add to this a standard enclosure so the heat doesn’t dissipate rapidly, and you have a great all-year-round cart.

Customize with a Battery Reducer.

Most accessories require a 12V battery, while most electric golf carts run on 36V or 48V. Thus, if you want to install speakers, lights, or other electronics, you will have to install a battery reducer.

As the name suggests, a battery reducer steps down the battery voltage so the system can handle any electronic add-on accessories.

Simple to install, battery reducers come with easy to install manuals and can be connected in less than half an hour.

Ride in style with a custom Suspension Lift Kit.

A suspension lift kit for a golf cart is not as complicated to install as you might think. With larger tires and a chrome finish, your golf cart will have better ground clearance, making it easier to use on unpaved areas.

Simply follow the manual and remember to maintain proper volt orientation, as this is the easiest and most common mistake in DIY installations.
