Protecting Your Golf Cart Batteries During Winter

When temperatures start dropping, it’s time to start thinking about your golf cart’s batteries. The last thing you want is to have completely dead batteries come spring.
I always advise our customers to use the Double Charge / Disconnect Method. Over the years I’ve found that by using this method batteries tend to last longer and we all can agree, that’s a good thing.
It all starts with a good set of batteries. If we start off with a weak battery in the system, there's a good chance that we’ll have dead batteries come spring.
Below is a step-by-step process to ensure come spring, you’ll have a good set of batteries ready-to-go!
- (1)Make sure the water level is correct in each battery.
- (2)Charge the batteries. Once their done charging, unplug the charger.
- (3)Charge the batteries again. They won’t charge as long this time but, it’ll raise the specific gravity higher to help from freezing.
- (4)Turn the key switch off and if the car is equipped with a run/tow switch, put it in tow.
- (5)Remove all connections on both the positive and negative sides of the battery pack.
- (6)If possible, remove the batteries and place them in an area that will not get extremely cold. If this is not possible, try to at least park the golf cart in an area that it will be out of direct weather.
Once spring hits, connect all the battery connections back. Check the water level and charge the golf cart again. Once this charge is complete, take the cart out and enjoy the warm weather!
